SEPTEMBER 9, 2021 READINGS...Ezra 2:1-4:5 & 1 Chronicles 3:19b-24
Cyrus has released those exiled in Babylon, and they return to the ruins of Jerusalem. Zerubbabel will lead them to begin to rebuild the Temple, later Nehemiah would lead the rebuilding of the city. We have listed for us the families that would initially return to Judah. They rebuilt the altar, and then begin to rebuild the Temple. Their enemies in the land of course oppose them. It is worth saying that this second Temple does not compare at all to Solomon’s beautiful Temple. Zerubbabel let the people of Judah alone to rebuild the Temple. This is all in fulfillment of the prophecy that the people would return, and both the Temple and the city rebuilt…the Temple first, then the city.
