MAY 27 READING…ACTS 16

Timothy joins Paul and Silas, and the first thing Paul does is have him circumcised. Timothy’s mom was Jewish and his father was Greek…the family was well known in Derbe and Lystra. It may seems strange for Paul who had just argued that circumcision wasn’t necessary for the Gentiles, and later he would clearly teach it was not necessary for salvation, to have Timothy circumcised. As we read we see clearly is was not for Timothy’s salvation, but as his mother was Jewish it was done that his lack of circumcision would not be a hindrance to reaching the Jews in the region. Paul received a vision from God to go to Macedonia, which led them to the city of Philippi. Paul led Lydia to the Lord, and she was baptized, and immediately began to take care of the followers of Jesus.

While in Philippi there was a demoned possessed slave girl, who through her possession made a lot of money for her masters. This demon possessed girl followed Paul and Silas around mocking and annoying them…Paul had enough and he cast the demon out of her. This angered her master and he had Paul and Silas beaten and thrown in prison. I don’t know about you, but I would have probably been licking my wounds and complaining about my situation, had this been me. But as midnight comes Paul and Silas are singing praises to the Lord. Suddenly, their chains fall off and the prison doors come open. The guard thinking the prisoners had escaped drew his sword and was about to take his own life, but Paul stopped him. It was at this point the jailer asked the all important question, “what must I do to be saved? Paul told him, “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.” Maybe you’re asking the same question today…the answer remains the same.

Please share your thoughts from today’s reading.
