MAY 20 READINGS...Psalm 83 & 1 Chronicles 29:23-25 & 2 Chronicles 1:1 & 1 Kings 2:13-3:15 & 2 Chronicles 1:2-13
Psalm 83 reveals a truth that seems to be continuing today. The Nation of Israel has always been surrounded by enemies that have wanted to destroy it. These enemies in ancient times made treaties with each other to come together and destroy Israel. Even today this continues…one only has to look at the news to see the nations conspiring together to use the Palestinians as tools to bomb and destabilize Israel. They are being used to gain support from the entire world to condemn Israel…the goal of these nations such as Iran and Lebanon are to destroy the nation of Israel. It is their desire to utterly destroy Israel and like Hitler in WW2 erase them from the face of the earth. There is a demonic element to all that has gone on in the Middle East and it continues to this day. The day will come when these nations will no longer merely use the Palestinians, and they will join together and attack Israel from every direction. Once again, their goal is to destroy Israel…but they will not be able to carry out their satanic plan…as the Lord will intervene! Psalm 83 is a cry out to God to protect His people from the attack of those who conspire against them.
We now move in our chronological readings to the beginning of the rule of King Solomon. Just as David had promised Solomon would follow him on the throne of Israel. You will remember that David made Solomon promise to eliminate his enemies that remained after David’s death. We are told that Solomon took a firm grip of the throne…killing David’s enemies in the nation…and even having his older brother, Adonijah, killed for trying to use Solomon’s mother to allow him to marry Abishag, to gain the throne. The Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream and asked him what he would have the Lord do for him. Solomon’s request was that the Lord would give him wisdom in order to lead the people of Israel. This request pleased the Lord. It reminds us of God’s promise to us in James 1:5…”If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” God promised to give Solomon great wisdom…what is sad, as we will see in our readings, Solomon did not always use what the Lord freely gave him. We are not much different from Solomon…for God has given us everything in Jesus…yet we don’t walk in what we have been given.
Please share your thoughts and insights from today’s readings. Think of all that the Lord has given you in Jesus…then walk and live in the great gifts of God. Let’s not live less than our birthright in the Lord Jesus!
