JULY 29 READING…2 CORINTHIANS 1
After Paul’s first letter to the church at Corinth things turned bad in the church. Rather than applying the instructions of the Apostle they started listening to false teachers who told them Paul was not an Apostle, and they should not listen to him. They attacked Paul with ad hominem attacks. Paul sent Titus to Corinth to deal with the issues there...and God used Titus to bring correction. This letter is partially a letter expressing Paul’s gratitude for the repentant majority, and continued teaching instructions for the whole church. Though, throughout this letter Paul has to defend his apostleship, his conduct, his character, and his calling.
Paul begins the letter by expressing gratitude to God who has brought him comfort in the times of suffering for the Gospel. In doing this Paul states that their suffering was not comparable to Christ’s. Paul is thankful for the Lord’s deliverance…and for the prayers of the believers in Corinth. Paul shares the great promise that every promise of God is “amen” in Jesus. Finally, he encourages them in reminding them that they are co-workers in the great work of the Gospel.
