JULY 15 READING…1 CORINTHIANS 7
Paul deals with the matter of marriage in this chapter…he gives several principles to us, and the church at Corinth. Paul would rather that people stay unmarried for the sake of giving one’s all to the Gospel. He said that a person who is married has to be concerned with their spouse and family. He was certainly not condemning marriage, he was merely speaking of the realities of both being married and being single in the work of the Lord. Paul was also concerned with married couples understanding that their bodies were not their own, but they belonged to their spouse. We should never use this as a weapon against our spouse.
When it comes to marriage and divorce, Paul restates God’s plan for us…that is one man, one woman for a lifetime. If one becomes a widow or widower, Paul encourages them to remain unmarried…but also says it would be better to remarry than to burn with lust. To the divorced person, it is better to remain unmarried…although Paul gives an exception to someone who is married to an unbeliever…they are free if the unbeliever divorces them. If the unbeliever wants to remain married, the believer should, for their faith sanctifies the home. Overall Paul says that if being unmarried causes one to burn with lust and sin, they should marry. Some have been given the gift of singleness, but not many. These are principles on marriage given to us…each of us have to workout our own status of marriage and life according to the Word of God.
