AUGUST 9 READING…2 CORINTHIANS 8

As we look at Chapter 8, notice how often “grace” and "gracious” appear in this chapter. Paul brings the churches in Macedonia to the attention of the Corinthian church and how their offering, despite their deep poverty, was motivated by the grace of God. This grace of God produces a disposition of heart with an “abundance of joy” that allows for sacrificial giving. We note that this offering was not only according to their ability, but beyond their ability. The Widows mite of Luke 12:44 comes to mind. This could not be accomplished without first giving themselves to the Lord. And we see the principle that God loves a cheerful giver because they gave freely and of their own accord.

Paul then encourages the Corinthians with 3 reasons to give similarly. 1) They have the example of the Macedonian churches. 2) It will prove the sincerity and genuineness of their love. 3) Jesus gave everything.

A willing heart is a must and that there should be a balance between the abundance of the one church giving to fill the need of the other. Encouraging the Corinthians to give, there is a reminder that the Israelites had no lack when gathering manna in the wilderness because some gathered more and gave to those who could not gather any. Paul then informs them that he is sending Titus to collect this offering and assures them that the local stewardship committee will be very careful with the funds recognizing that they answer not only to man, but to God Himself. Paul then closes with a final vote of confidence and exhortation that they will demonstrate their love and follow through on their love offering just as Paul is telling Titus that they’re going to do.
