AUGUST 27 READINGS...Lamentations 2:1-4:22
Lamentations 5:1-22 & Obadiah 1:1-21 & 2 Kings 25:22-26 & Jeremiah 40:13-41:18.
Jeremiah makes sure we understand truths about God. He gets angry at the sin of His people who should know better. What many refuse to understand is that they have a warped picture of God. They say, “God is love”…and He is love, that’s true…but He is also righteous and holy, and many other things. His love, righteousness, and holiness are all on display as He deals out His judgment on Judah and Jerusalem. There are those who believe that God has changed from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Impossible…God is immutable. He is who He eternally is. And He is perfectly everything He is. One attribute of God is not greater than another, for they are all perfect in Him. God judges His sinful people, and He abandons their profane Temple. Their sins have brought this on their own heads…for they thought like so many today that because God is love, they can sin with impunity. All sin is judged by God…it is either judged by being placed on Christ at Calvary, or each person who rejects Christ will be judge for their own sin. The judgment of God is so great on Jerusalem in Jeremiah’s day that the royals and rich sat in sackcloth silently…and the old and the hound died and their bodies remained in the streets.
It is during this horrible time of the Lord’s just judgment that Jeremiah reminds himself and us about just who God is. He is the Lord who is faithful in His love. His mercies are new every morning. He is our inheritance. The Lord he is good…and He is our salvation. You see Jeremiah understood truths about God that many don’t know today, even professing Christians. So, many change God into the image that makes them comfortable…rather than receiving the whole picture of who God is and surrendering to Him. Finally, Jeremiah reminds us that once God’s judgment is finished He doesn’t continue in order to be brutal or cruel. After judgment comes restoration…and that was Jeremiah’s hope.
Please share your thoughts from today’s reading. Be careful to not try creating God in the image you want…for then He is no longer God. Also, don’t get so enamored with one attribute of God, that you neglect the others.
